When astrologers compare two charts, they look closely at aspects: the angles the planets form with one another. Some can create more ease, and others bring friction. There are five major ones worth knowing:
Conjunction: Two planets sit very close together, blending and intensifying their energies. Depending on the planets involved, this can be a very good thing—or a lot of one thing.
Trine: A naturally flowing connection. The two planets tend to work well together, which can make that part of the relationship feel easy and instinctive.
Sextile: Another supportive connection, but usually a little less automatic than a trine. The potential is there; you may just have to meet it halfway.
Square: A more challenging connection. The planets rub against each other, which can create tension, frustration, chemistry, or all three before breakfast.
Opposition: The planets sit across from each other, creating a push-pull dynamic. You may be coming at something from completely different directions while still being very drawn to each other.
You will also see a little number beside each aspect. That’s the orb: how far the planets are from forming the exact angle. Generally, the smaller the orb, the tighter the connection. So a 1° trine would usually get more attention than a 6° trine.
But tighter doesn’t mean better—it just means that particular connection may be more noticeable. And a trine isn’t automatically better than a square, either. The planets involved make a big difference: a Venus-Mars square is going to feel very different from a Moon-Saturn square, even though they’re both squares.

Aspects tell you how two planets get along. Houses tell you where all of that is happening. When you compare two birth charts, your planets land in their houses and theirs land in yours—and where they land can tell you a lot about the role you end up playing in each other’s lives.

How to Check Your Birth Chart Compatibility
You’ll need both people’s birth dates, birthplaces, and ideally exact birth times. Accurate birth times matter most for the Rising sign and houses; you can still compare plenty of planetary placements without one.
Plug both sets of birth details into an online synastry chart calculator, and it’ll generate a chart showing how your planets connect. Start with the Sun, Moon, Venus, and Mars, then look at the aspects between your planets and where they land in each other’s houses.
And try very hard not to end a perfectly good relationship because you found one square.
So... Are You Actually Compatible?
Your birth charts aren’t going to hand you a yes or no. One part of your synastry can feel ridiculously easy while another explains the argument you’ve somehow had fourteen times.
A chart can have plenty of ease alongside plenty of friction. You might communicate brilliantly but want completely different things from a relationship. The chemistry might be ridiculous while your day-to-day habits drive each other insane. You can feel incredibly understood by someone who also possesses the unique ability to annoy you in under three seconds.
The useful part is seeing what those things actually are. Synastry can show you where you’re likely to click and where the same issues might keep cropping up, but it can’t tell you which ones matter most to you. Something that barely registers for one couple could be an absolute dealbreaker for another.
Your Synastry, But Make It Makeup
We’ve read the synastry. Now for the equally important question: the makeup.
If the chemistry is chemistry-ing
